About Sanford Bog

Sanford Bog is a remarkable boreal peat bog situated near Mount Washington in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. As part of the Great Gulf Wilderness area within the White Mountain National Forest, this bog provides critical habitat for rare plant species and serves as an important carbon sink. The bog’s landscape is characterized by sphagnum moss mats, stunted spruce and fir trees, and an abundance of wetland flora including carnivorous plants such as pitcher plants and sundews. Historically, Sanford Bog has remained largely undisturbed, preserving a rare example of a northern peatland ecosystem in the northeastern United States. Visitors access the bog primarily via the nearby trails that traverse the rugged terrain around the Great Gulf, a deep glacial cirque surrounded by steep cliffs of Mount Washington and adjacent peaks. Hiking through the area offers opportunities to observe the unique wetland ecosystem and spot wildlife adapted to the cooler, acidic environment. Sanford Bog’s isolation and ecological importance make it a compelling destination for naturalists, botanists, and hikers seeking a less crowded wilderness experience. The site is also often studied for its roles in biodiversity maintenance and carbon sequestration. Visitors should be prepared for wet footing and unpredictable mountain weather, and are encouraged to stay on designated trails to protect the fragile bog habitat.
